Swiss-type lathes
A Swiss-type lathe supports the bar in a guide bushing right next to the tool and feeds it along Z with a sliding headstock. Small, long parts do not deflect, so accuracy holds in high-volume production.
Parts it suits
- Small-diameter parts with a high length-to-diameter ratio
- Pins, small shafts, screws and connector parts
- Medical, dental, electronics and watch parts
- High-volume parts run continuously from bar
Specs to check
| Spec | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Max bar diameter | Commonly 12, 20, 26, 32 or 38 mm; choose by your largest part. |
| Machining length per chucking | Sets the longest part you can make without re-gripping. |
| With or without guide bushing | Short parts can run without the bushing to reduce bar remnant. |
| Number of axes and tools | More tools and axes allow overlapping operations and a shorter cycle. |
| Sub-spindle and back working | Needed when both ends of the part are machined. |
| Live tools and Y axis | For cross drilling, slotting and flats. |
How to choose
- Parts under about 32 mm that are many times longer than their diameter: a Swiss-type is usually the right choice.
- Short parts with a larger diameter: a chucker or bar lathe is usually more economical.
- Use ground or precision cold-drawn bar so the guide bushing works reliably.
- Plan the bar feeder and cutting oil from the start, since these machines run for long hours.
- Send the drawing with yearly volume so the number of axes can be defined.
Common options
- Automatic bar feeder
- High-pressure oil pump
- Oil mist collector
- Parts conveyor
- Back-end live tool unit
- Thread whirling unit
Delivery, installation and warranty
New machines usually take about 1.5 to 5 months to build, depending on model and configuration. Installation, training and warranty service are provided by the builder or its dealer in Vietnam; the exact terms are stated in each quote. For many models a test cut with your own part can be arranged, so mention it in your request.
